What Single Subject Teaching Credential options does CSUMB offer?

CSU Monterey Bay offers two alternatives for earning your Single Subject credential:

Traditional

The traditional version of the Single Subject program offers opportunities for students to gain classroom experience through co-teaching (student teaching) with a cooperating teacher.

Intern

CSUMB’s Single Subject Teaching Internship Program, gives students the opportunity to earn their credential while teaching. This option is directed toward students who have had significant experience teaching in schools prior to enrolling in the program. In the Internship program, students are hired by local districts and assume full responsibility for teaching. A teacher from that school will be selected as a support provider to help the student through the internship experience.

How is the curriculum of the Single Subject Credential Program structured?

Once an applicant has been admitted into the Single Subject Program, he or she can choose from one of the two pathways: co-teaching or internship. The major difference between the two is in the field placement. Generally, the internship pathway is designed for candidates who come to the program with significant teaching experience and a contract with a local district with whom we have a legal partnership for the Intern Program. The Student Teaching Pathway is designed for those relatively new to teaching as well as those who are not working under contract with a partner district.

Co-Teaching Pathway (Student Teaching)

If you enter the student teaching pathway, you will be placed by the Single Subject Program in a school from 7:30-Noon (or the equivalent) every day from the beginning of the normal K-12 school year in early August to the end of the year in late May or early June. In general, Single Subject Program university classes are scheduled in the late afternoon/early evening and some weekends throughout the year, including the summer.

The Internship Pathway and Internship Credential

If you have a teaching contract with a local partner school district and meet all the admissions requirements for the internship, you will be assigned to the California Teacher Internship Program (CTIP). In this case you will teach the classes assigned to you by contract. Your supervised teaching will take place within the classes you regularly teach. All Single Subject university classes are scheduled in the late afternoon/early evening and some weekends throughout the year, including summer to accommodate those with full time teaching obligations.
