Welcome to the Single Subject Teacher Credential program. The faculty and support personnel look forward to contributing to your professional development and are excited by the ways in which your particular experiences and perspectives will enrich our learning community!

The School of Education at California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) is committed to the development of programs that reflect a high degree of integration between theory and practice through collaborative program development between public schools, the community, and this university.

The Single Subject English Learner Authorization Credential (ELA) authorizes the holder to teach school age students, from non-English backgrounds, who are limited in English proficiency. The ELA option (once referred to as “CLAD”) authorizes the holder to teach in their subject area using strategies for English Language Development (ELD) and Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE). It is the mission of the program to prepare teachers who are committed to and able to bring about success for ALL students.

If you choose to become a middle school or high school teacher, you will embark on a career characterized by work that is intellectually, emotionally, and physically demanding. During the Single Subject Program you will be engaged in deep reflection about who you are as a teacher and what you believe. You also will be DOING a lot: planning lessons, managing classrooms, empathizing with students, and assessing the learning that is going on around you. You will be both a student at CSU Monterey Bay and a teacher in the real world. The program may well bring stress and strain, but it can also bring joy. You will have chosen a career that is arguably one of the most fulfilling of all professions. We salute you and pledge our support to you throughout your Single Subject Program.
